Welcome to The Old Home Place, a blog dedicated to the journey that my family and I are beginning in search of a sustainable, self-sufficient family homestead.  Initially, we are taking steps to decrease our dependency on corporate consumption, and ultimately our farm will provide us with not only sustenance, but also income.  Like any other entrepreneur, I have a lot of learning to do, but unlike most, I'm going to let you watch as I stumble through lesson after lesson with my family.  With a little luck, this blog, Twitter account, and YouTube channel will help you learn something, too. Even if you don't, my attempts should make for some pretty amusing adventures.  Whether you're still trying to decide if this is the life for you, or you're a seasoned homesteader yourself, I hope you find something here to make the visit worth your while.

My wife and I are raising five daughters, all whom we hope to cultivate into gritty, independent women who know what they want and how to get it for themselves.  They are beautiful, intelligent, kind girls who have enough spirit and imagination to follow their mother and me headfirst into a life for which none of us us really very well prepared.  We're going to count on the expertise and support of our friends who have already begun a similar journey as we muddle through everything from chicken care to engine maintenance and vegetable gardens to firearms.

You're probably going to be baffled by some of the decisions we make and roll your eyes at some of our mistakes, but I hope that all of you enjoy our lives as spectators as much as we enjoy them as participants.  Feel free to ask us why we did what we did or give us friendly pointers about how to do it better the next time.  We're learning as we go because life is too short to wait until you've figured it all out to get started.
